Each autumn Bournemouth’s seafront becomes a running course for the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, one of the south coast’s biggest mass-participation running weekends. Thousands of runners take on a route that makes the most of the promenade, clifftops and bay views.

A distance for everyone

The festival spreads its races across two days, from the headline marathon and half marathon to a 10K, 5K and shorter events for children. That mix makes it as much a family weekend as a serious runners’ challenge.

Watching the action

Spectating is free, and the seafront and clifftops give plenty of vantage points to cheer runners on. The atmosphere along the promenade — bands, supporters and sea air — is a big part of the appeal.

Planning your visit

Roads near the seafront are affected on race days, so allow extra time and check the route in advance. Pair race morning with a walk out along Bournemouth Pier or breakfast nearby once the runners are underway.
