Each winter, Bournemouth town centre is strung with hundreds of glowing Christmas trees, forming a free festive trail that winds from the square down through the gardens. It has become one of the town’s signature seasonal draws, turning an ordinary evening stroll into a walk through a forest of lights.
The light trail
The route threads between the high street and the Lower Gardens, where illuminated trees line the paths and the boughs overhead sparkle after dark. Along the way you will find seasonal decorations, photo spots and a warm, unhurried atmosphere that suits families and couples alike.
What else is on
The trail usually runs alongside the town’s wider Christmas offering, which can include a market, fairground rides and festive food and drink stalls near the square. It is an easy, free thing to do on a cold evening, and pairs well with a wander down to the floodlit seafront.
Visiting tips
The trees look their best after dusk, so aim for an evening visit once the lights come on. Weekends before Christmas are the busiest, so a weekday walk is calmer if you prefer fewer crowds. Wrap up warm, and consider rounding off the evening with a hot drink in town or a bracing stroll towards Bournemouth Pier.
